PNG security guard charged with murder over supermarket shooting

Two children were injured in the shopping centre shooting.

Police in Papua New Guinea have charged a man with murder for allegedly shooting dead his colleague in a suburban supermarket.

PNG police said two Filipino men, both security guards at the site, shot at each other inside the Boroko Foodworld supermarket at around 6:00pm on Thursday.

One of the men was killed and two bystanders, both children, were injured.

Witnesses said one child was shot in the leg and another was grazed by a bullet and had minor injuries.

Both are being treated in hospital.

Police have arrested the other Filipino man and charged him with willful murder.

Port Moresby police superintendent Perou N'Dranou said other charges were likely for wounding the two children.

"We are looking at, from the incident, about three charges," he said.

Commander N'Dranou said police were trying to work out why the man killed his colleague.

"We cannot determine it now, but through the investigation, with a witness and then with a suspect and with other people we hope to establish a motive on that one," he said.

The shooting occurred the same day PNG's parliament debated introducing a total ban on private firearms.

The government has already put a moratorium on issuing new gun licences in response to high rates of gun crime.
