Homicide squad detectives are investigating the death of an apparent intruder during a confrontation in Melbourne's south-east this morning.

Emergency services were called to reports of an alleged stabbing at a property on St Georges Avenue in Bentleigh East about 2:00am.

"Investigators have been told two men attended the property and entered an underground car park," a Victoria Police spokesperson said in a statement.

"The pair were confronted by two residents of the complex and a struggle ensued."

One of the men was taken to hospital, where he later died.

The two residents of the apartment block have been arrested and are assisting police with their inquiries. One of them sustained an arm injury.

The other man fled the scene but has since been found by police. He is assisting investigators, the spokesperson said.

Investigations continued this morning, with forensic teams gathering evidence and detectives interviewing residents.

Police officers were this morning monitoring a small black car parked approximately 50 metres from the apartment complex that had sustained damage to its passenger door and window.

Authorities have not confirmed if the car is linked to the incident.
