A man was shot to death Wednesday in West Humboldt Park.

About 2:50 a.m., officers found an unidentified man lying unresponsive in the street in the 4400 block of West Chicago Avenue, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He has since been identified as Kavonte Smith, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. His age remains unknown.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine his official cause of death.

There were no witnesses to the shooting and the circumstances remain unknown, police said.

Freezing raindrops pelted the barren stretch of Chicago Avenue, forcing responding officers to take shelter in their vehicles. One pedestrian on his way to work stopped to ask police the quickest way around the crime scene.

Area North detectives are investigating.
