Man killed in Tralee, Co Kerry stabbing named locally as Joe Brosnan

The man who was killed in a fatal assault in Kerry at the weekend has been named locally as Joe Brosnan.

Mr Brosnan, aged in his 50s, died after he was discovered with serious injuries in an apartment in the Abbey Court complex in Tralee after 7pm on Sunday evening.

He was a local man from Tralee and came from a "well-respected and hard working family" in the town who have suffered previous tragedy.

Sinn Fein councillor Cathal Foley told the Irish Mirror: “I know his family well. He is a local Tralee man all his life.

“His family are in Tralee. They are a very well-respected and hard working family.

“This family has suffered tragedy before. His younger brother lost his life tragically as well. It’s another tragedy that’s visited on the family. It’s terrible news.”

It is believed that Mr Brosnan sustained a knife injury and two men have been arrested in connection with his death.

Councillor Cathal Foley said: “It’s a very rare occurrence in Tralee. We wouldn’t have too many stabbings or serious assaults or anything like that.”

Gardai arrested a man aged in his 50s in relation to the incident on Sunday night and a second man aged in his 30s on Monday.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man, in his 50s, in Tralee, Co. Kerry have made a second arrest.

"As a result of investigations, a man in his early 30s has been arrested and is currently detained at Killarney Garda station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"The man arrested last night remains in Garda custody. Investigations ongoing."

Gardai and emergency services were called to the apartment shortly after 7pm on Sunday evening but Mr Brosnan was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The local coroner was notified and the services of the State Pathologist and Garda Technical Bureau have been requested by investigating Gardaí.

A technical examination of the scene and a post-mortem examination was due to be conducted on Monday morning.

An incident room has been established at Tralee Garda Station and an initial case conference has been held by investigators.
