Man killed in Tipperary motorway crash named locally as gardai issue appeal over video footage

A man who died following a two-car collision on a busy motorway in Tipperary yesterday has been named locally.

Jimmy Cooney, who was in his 80s, was tragically killed following the incident on the M8 on Monday evening.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene following the crash involving two cars between Junction 6 and 7 at around 4pm.

Mr Cooney, who is from the Fethard/Clerihan area of south Tipperary, was the only occupant of his car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman in her 30s, who was also travelling alone in the other vehicle, was taken to hospital following the crash.

She is understood to be in Cork University Hospital where she is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Local councillors have expressed their condolences to Mr Cooney's family following his tragic death yesterday.

Declan Burgess, a Fine Gael Councillor in the Cashel-Tipperary area said that while he did not know Mr Cooney, who is from a neighbouring parish, his death was very sad news.

"My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very sad time," he told the Irish Mirror.

His comments were echoed by Imelda Goldsboro, a Fianna Fail Councillor in Carrick On Suir who said: "My sincere sympathies to his family during this very difficult time."

Gardai issued an appeal on Monday night for people not to share footage of the crash on social media.

They are aware of a video circulating on social media and have asked the public to not spread it online.

They said in a statement: "Investigating Gardai are aware of video footage and images of the collision currently circulating online.

"Out of respect to the family of the deceased and to those involved we would ask people not to share this material."

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Thurles Garda Station on 0504-25100 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
