Residents of Rock Grove told the ECHO they were "shaken" by the event - adding it was "scary" something like this could happen on their street.
Today a large cordon remained in place with officers from several Merseyside Police vehicles standing guard outside the property and at the start of the road. Forensic officers from police scientific support later arrived at the scene shortly before 10am and could be seen taking photos of the street.
One woman who lived inside the cordon told the ECHO she didn't hear any commotion in the lead up to the incident - and first knew something was happening when her daughter looked outside and told her there were police cars outside. She added: "I've lived on this street for seven years and never heard anything like this before. It's shocking something like this can happen here."
One resident told the ECHO she had a knock on the door from police shortly after 9pm last night enquiring about the fatal stabbing. A post mortem is still to take place to establish the cause of death of the man.
Chief Inspector Jim Wilde from Merseyside Police said: "This was a tragic incident in which a man has sadly lost his life. An investigation is now underway, which is in the very early stages as we seek to establish what has happened.
"I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Rock Grove this evening between 8.30pm and 9pm to please get in touch. You may have seen or heard something suspicious which has led to this tragic incident.
"It is vital that people with information, no matter how small, to please contact us as it might be vital to the investigation."
