Man killed in shocking west Dublin stabbing named locally as Noel Whelan

A man in his 20s who was stabbed to death in west Dublin on Saturday night has been named locally as Noel Whelan.

Emergency services rushed to Castlecurragh Heath in Mulhuddart yesterday evening where Whelan received medical attention before being announced dead a short time later.

The incident is believed to have been the result of a domestic row and is not linked to any ongoing feuds in the Mulhuddart/Blanchardstown area.

A man later handed himself in to Blanchardstown gardai and is currently being detained.

Man, 20s, dies following stabbing in Mulhuddart

A spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Blanchardstown are investigating the death of a man in his 20s following an incident at house in Mulhuddart.

"Shortly after 6pm Gardaí attended the scene of an incident in a house at Castlecurragh Heath, Mulhuddart where a man in his 20s was discovered with apparent stab wounds. He was treated at the scene by emergency services personnel but was pronounced dead a short time later.

"Investigating Gardaí have since arrested a man in his 20s in connection with the incident. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Finglas Garda Station.

"The body of deceased remains at the scene and the Office of the State Pathologist has been notified. The assistance of the Garda Technical Bureau has been requested by investigators and an incident room has been established at Blanchardstown Garda Station.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Blanchardstown Garda Station 01-6669000 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111."

Local Fianna Fail TD Jack Chambers condemned the attack, telling Dublin Live: "It is shocking to see such a violent knife attack in a residential area this evening and my thoughts are with the victim and his family at this difficult time.

"I would encourage anyone to contact the Gardai if they have any information. Communities in West Dublin are experiencing a worrying escalation of violence and crime in recent times and we need to see continued visibility of Gardai and deployment of national Garda units so people can feel safe in their homes and communities."
