Man killed in shark attack off Fraser Island

Queensland Police have confirmed a man has been killed in a shark attack off Fraser Island, off the coast from Hervey Bay.

Police say the 36-year-old Sunshine Coast man was spearfishing in the waters near Indian Head when he was attacked.

Emergency services were called to Indian Head Bypass Road just after 2:00pm.

A doctor and nurse provided first aid to the man on the shore before paramedics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fraser Coast mayor George Seymour says the attack is a sad day for the community.

"Our deepest condolences go to this young man's family and friends," Cr Seymour said.

"The loss of a young life with his future before him is a tragedy beyond words. We share their sadness and grief."

A rescue helicopter flew to the island before taking the man's body to Hervey Bay.

Police will now prepare a report for the coroner.
