A man was killed in a shark attack at Cable beach in Broome in the north of Western Australia on Sunday morning.

The attack occurred approximately 1.5km north of Cable Beach Surf Club.

ABC reported police recovered the man from the water and treated him before St John’s Ambulance officers arrived.

The beach has been closed and people in the area are being advised to take caution.

The shark is believed to still be at large and its species is not yet known.

WA’s primary industries and regional development department said a fisheries patrol vessel was monitoring the area.

Surf Live Saving WA’s patrols of the beach finished last month.

Cable Beach is a popular tourist spot and has also had a number of saltwater crocodile sightings and box jellyfish attacks over the years.
