A 21-year-old man was killed in a possible drug deal gone bad early Thursday in northwest Indiana, according to police.

Officers responded at 3:10 a.m. to a shooting in the 7200 block of Columbia Avenue in Hammond and found the man lying in an alley, according to a statement from Hammond police.

The man, identified as Willie A. Summers, was pronounced dead at the scene, police and the Lake County coroner’s office said.

A gun and package of marijuana found at the scene suggest a “possible possible drug deal gone bad,” police said.

An autopsy released Thursday found Summers, who lived in Hammond, died of a gunshot wound, the coroner’s office said.

Hammond police are conducting a homicide investigation.

Anyone with information about the crime were asked to contact Hammond Det. Sgt. Guernsey at 219-852-2978 or Det. Sgt. Nemcek at 219-852-2977.
