Man killed in horror stabbing in North Strand, Dublin named locally as Aidan McMenamy

Gardai have launched a murder inquiry after a man was stabbed to death yesterday.

Aidan McMenamy was fatally injured after a row broke out between two men at a house on Clinchs Court off North Strand, Dublin, and later spilled on to the road outside.

The alarm was raised and the victim was taken to the Mater Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A second man, who is aged in his mid-40s, was brought to St James’s Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

A 45-year-old man was arrested yesterday afternoon in connection with the killing and was being detained at Mountjoy Garda station.

It’s understood a woman was also at the scene when the incident occurred.

A local, who did not wish to be named, reported hearing a heated argument taking place.

The source added: “Raised voices could be heard coming from the house, there sounded like there was an
argument going on.

“That was from around 1.30am onwards. Things obviously escalated then which resulted in the man’s death.

“The guys who lived there are only there since the start of the year.” It’s not known if Mr McMenamy lived at the house or was visiting when the incident happened.

Another neighbour said it was a very quiet area normally and everyone is shocked by the news. She added: “I only moved here recently and love the area. It’s quiet and there’s no trouble.”

Independent councillor and former Dublin Lord Mayor Christy Burke said the area where the incident happened is very safe. He said: “First of all I want to offer my deepest sympathy to the family of the man who met his death.

“I know the community is in shock after waking up to the news and to discover there has been a murder on the doorstep.

“When you look across the city over the last few days and the amount of violence.

“There have been assaults on the Luas, assaults in public outside a hotel and then you are faced with a murder, really and truly it’s becoming a frightening city. At the end of the day it’s a sad time. It’s an avenue that is becoming very familiar, very frequent, that it’s nearly becoming normalised by the number of assaults and knife crime in the city.”

“It’s a very settled area. The residents go out and work in the morning and come back in the evening. It’s a very safe place to live on.”

A Garda spokeswoman confirmed a man was arrested following the incident and was being detained at a station in the city.

She added: “The arrest was made this morning and he is currently detained at Mountjoy Garda station under Section 4, Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

“The postmortem is due to take place later today by State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.

“The scene remains preserved and the technical bureau are currently at scene.

“Officers are appealing to any persons who may have been in the area between 3.30am. and 4.15am or any passing taxis with dash cam footage to contact Mountjoy Garda station on 01 6668600, the Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any station.”
