Man killed in horror hit-and-run in Letterkenny, Co Donegal named locally

A man was arrested yesterday in relation to a fatal hit-and-run.

The victim, named locally as Jason Haughey, was found in a serious condition on the roadside on the outskirts of Letterkenny, Co Donegal, at Windyhall at around 4am on Monday.

The 30-year-old was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

After technical examinations, gardai discovered he had been hit by a vehicle which failed to stop.

A man in his 20s was later arrested and taken to Letterkenny Garda station.

A spokesman said: “Gardai have arrested a man, aged in his 20s, in relation to this investigation.

“He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Letterkenny Garda Station. Investigations are ongoing.”

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information in relation to this incident to come forward.

The road on which the victim was found is busy at times and is known locally as having many twists and turns.

Although Mr Haughey was found at 4am by a road-user, the accident could have happened much earlier.

Gardai are appealing for anybody who was in the area between 1am and 4am and who may have dashcam footage to contact them.

Officers are also calling door-to-door as part of their investigation while local CCTV footage is also being harvested.

Mr Haughey’s remains were yesterday being held at Letterkenny University Hospital where a postmortem took place.

He was well-known in the town, was not married and was unemployed.
