
Cessnock Road has been reopened after a fatal accident near Gillieston Heights this monring.
A 35-year-old Gillieston Heights man was killed when his car collided head-on with a truck on Cessnock Road between Maitland and Gilliseton Heights about 7.45am on Saturday.
Police said the man's Toyota sedan was on the wrong side of the road when it hit the truck about 25 metres south of the Dagworth Road intersection with Cessnock Road.
Motorists stopped at the scene and rendered first aid to the man, who was found unconscious inside the car.
They rendered CPR to the man before police and paramedics arrived.
The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, was taken to John Hunter Hospital by paramedics but did not recover.
Police diverted traffic away from the accident scene.
The driver of the truck, which had just made a delivery to Woolworths in Maitland, was not injured.
