Man killed in crash after driving wrong way along Yorkshire motorway

The driver travelled north on the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) ( Google Maps )

A man in his 30s has been killed in a crash after driving his car the wrong way on a motorway.

The red Suzuki Swift was driven north along the A1(M) southbound in West Yorkshire.

It collided with another car before hitting the central reservation, police said.

It comes weeks after three people were killed when their car – towing a caravan –was driven the wrong way up the M40 in south Oxfordshire before crashing.

In yesterday’s accident, around 6.20pm near Ferrybridge, the Suzuki driver suffered fatal injuries, police said, while the man in the other car, a silver Hyundai i40, was taken to hospital with injuries that are said not to be life-threatening.

Police believe other cars may have been involved in more minor collisions with the Swift before the fatal crash, and are investigating what happened.

A spokesman said: “West Yorkshire Police received a number of 999 calls at the time of the collision.

“Enquiries will be ongoing today to investigate the circumstances of what took place.

“Anyone who saw the fatal collision, the Swift in the moments leading up to it, or who was involved in a collision with the Suzuki but was able to drive from the scene and has not yet spoken with officers is asked to contact the major collision and inquiry team.”

He also asked anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to contact police.
