Man killed in Austin shooting: police

A man was fatally shot July 14, 2019 in Austin on the West Side.

A man was shot to death Sunday in Austin on the West Side.

The man, 22, was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head about 6:15 a.m. in an alley in the 800 block of North LeClaire Avenue, Chicago police said.

He was taken to West Suburban Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not released about the fatality.

State Rep. La Shawn Ford said his vehicle was struck by bullets as a result of the incident.

“I was lucky my family wasn’t sitting in the vehicle when this happened,” Ford said in a statement. “Though I was lucky, a lot of people on the West Side are not. The city needs to take more aggressive steps to protect the people on the West Side and end this violence now.”

A bullet also flew into a family’s home nearby, Ford said. It was found lodged in the armrest of a love seat.

At least 26 of Chicago’s 236 fatal shootings so far this year have happened in the Austin community area, according to the Chicago Sun-Times homicide tracker.

Area North detectives are investigating the circumstances of the shooting. No one is in custody, police said.
