'Shocked the whole site': Man dies in Port Kembla steelworks accident

Police said the man became trapped between a car and a crane about 2:00pm.

A man has been killed in a workplace accident at Port Kembla steelworks, south of Sydney.

NSW police said the 59-year-old became trapped between a car and a crane this afternoon.

Paramedics rushed to the scene, but he could not be saved.

He has not yet been formally identified.

A statement from steelworks operator BlueScope confirmed the man was an employee of Southern Commercial Divers, and that wharf operations had been halted while his death was investigated.

It is understood he had been involved in maintenance work for several days at one of the berths.

SafeWork New South Wales and Wollongong Police District officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

BlueScope shuts site

In a statement, BlueScope's general manager of manufacturing, Dave Bell, said the man's death occurred about 2:25pm.

"The man, an employee of Southern Commercial Divers, was working at the wharf known as Berth 112," the statement said.

It continued: "This is an unexpected and tragic event that has shocked the whole site. We are thinking especially of this man's family, friends and work colleagues at this time."

The Australian Workers' Union said it too would make inquiries into the incident.

"Today's death should serve as a tragic reminder that we can never be complacent about worker safety," the union said.

"Our members work in tough and dangerous conditions.

"We will be working with BlueScope and SafeWork NSW throughout the police and coronial inquiry.

"Our union will also be making enquiries to find out how this happened and help ensure it never happens again."

In March last year, a man lost his leg at the nearby Port Kembla coal terminal in a workplace accident.

The man, in his 40s, was unloading his truck when it began to roll and trapped, crushing his leg.

He later died in hospital days later and a SafeWork investigation was launched.
