March 27--A Chicago man shot and killed a childhood friend last year after a fight over the gunman's girlfriend, prosecutors said Saturday.
The shooting happened on May 7, 2015, at about 5 p.m. on the 7000 block of South Sangamon Street in the Englewood neighborhood, prosecutors said.
Christopher Harp, 30, got into an altercation with Antonio Galtney over Harp's girlfriend, prosecutors said in the man's bond hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building after being charged with first-degree murder.
Harp fled after the altercation but returned shortly thereafter. Galtney, of the 500 block of East 51st Street, was standing in the street when Harp returned and shot him, said Assistant State's Attorney Anna Sedelmaier.
As Galtney tried to run away, he fell down and Harp shot him a second time, Sedelmaier said.
Galtney, 28, was shot in the armpit area and the thigh, and was pronounced dead later that evening at Stroger Hospital.
Surveillance video showed Harp park a silver vehicle in an alley behind a residence on the 7000 block of South Morgan Street and then walk through a gate, Sedelmaier said.
As he walked through the gangway and front courtyard, he appeared to be hiding an object on his right side, prosecutors said, referring to the surveillance video. When he approached the front of the home, Harp walked toward another house with his arm extended, pointing an object at another person, prosecutors said.
Police found two .45-caliber shell casings at the scene and also searched Harp's vehicle, where they found a gun that was not used in Galtney's shooting. They also found an empty holster, which appeared to fit a .45-caliber gun.
Harp lives near the scene of the shooting, prosecutors said.
A witness on the scene who had known both Galtney and Harp for about 20 years identified Harp as the gunman, prosecutors said. Another witness identified the person on the surveillance video as Harp.
Police obtained an arrest warrant for Harp, who is known as "Head," earlier this month. He was arrested on March 24.
Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil ordered Harp held on $2 million bond.
