Man killed by runaway cow in town centre after it breaks loose from livestock market

A pensioner has died after being trampled by a cow that escaped from a livestock market.

The animal escaped from the Whitland Mart livestock market in the Carmarthenshire town of Whitland on the morning of Saturday, November 19, and injured the man in the town centre.

Dyfed-Powys Police today confirmed that the man had died.

Speaking shortly after the attack, a Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said the cow had come across the elderly man in North Road, where it had attacked and trampled him.

The man sustained serious injuries as a result, Wales Online reported.

Following this, the cow went onto the rail track in the area. Trains had to be put on stop as a result, to prevent danger to passengers.

Eventually, the cow made its way to a field, where it was dispatched with the consent of its owner after attempted to contain it failed.

The man was flown to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for treatment but he later died.

A police spokesman's full statement read: "[The cow] came across an elderly man in North Road where it attacked and trampled him, causing serious injury.

"The cow then went on the rail track in the area and trains had to be put on stop to mitigate the danger to them.

"Eventually it made its way to a field where every effort was made to safely contain it in consultation with the owner.

"Unfortunately all attempts failed and, due to the danger posed by the animal, it was humanely dispatched with the consent of the owner."

"Dyfed-Powys Police, together with the Health and Safety Executive, are investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident where a cow that had escaped from Whitland Mart injured an elderly man in North Road, Whitland, at around 10.15am on Saturday, November 19," the spokesman added.
