Man killed by falling tree in 100mph winds as Storm Arwen claims second victim

A man has died in Cumbria after a tree fell on him as Storm Arwen battered the UK.

The tragedy happened in Ambleside at around 11pm on Friday.

The man, from Lancashire, is the second known victim of the storm after a popular headteacher was killed in Northern Ireland when a tree fell on his car.

In a statement Cumbria Police said: "Police were called to the scene at 11pm yesterday (November 26).

"Emergency services including Fire, Search and Rescue, Ambulance and Police attended the scene.

"Police and partner agencies are attending the scene as the tree remains dangerous and the public is asked to avoid the area until the tree has been made safe."

Last night a much-loved primary school teacher died as Storm Arwen hit Northern Ireland.

Francis Lagan, a father of four, was head of St Mary’s Primary School in Maghera, Co Londonderry, in Northern Ireland, for several years and well known in the local community, it is reported.

Tributes have poured in for Mr Lagan, believed to be in his 40s.

He is understood to have been travelling with his wife and children when strong winds uprooted a tree that struck the vehicle.

A St Mary's school statement for parents read: "It is with great pain and sadness this evening that I have to inform you of the untimely death of our much loved principal Mr Lagan.

"May his gentle soul rest in peace."

Gusts of 98 mph hit Brizlee Wood in Northumberland, according to the Met Office, which said amber and yellow warnings remained in place today across much of the country.

"Many roads remain closed so please only travel if absolutely necessary," it said on Twitter.
