Man killed by ambulance travelling to emergency

The man died at the scene.

An ambulance has struck and killed a pedestrian while en route to an emergency in Melbourne's south-east overnight.

The vehicle was travelling west along Cranbourne Road, Frankston, when it hit the man near Wattle Tree Lane just before 2:30am.

Ambulance Victoria said the vehicle was travelling with its lights and sirens on.

It has described the death as a "tragic accident".

"Sadly the patient has passed away at the scene," a statement from Ambulance Victoria said.

"We extend our deepest sympathy to the patient's family."

It said a full investigation into the circumstances of the collision would be conducted.

The man is yet to be formally identified.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
