Worker dies after getting caught in machinery at Jefferson Park car wash

A man was killed July 11, 2019 at a car wash in Jefferson Park.

A man was killed Thursday when he got caught in machinery at the Express Car Wash where he worked in Jefferson Park on the Northwest Side.

Adam Cerceo, 45, was working at the Express Car Wash, 4820 W. Lawrence Ave., about 10 p.m. in the 4800 block of West Lawrence Avenue when he sustained a serious injury, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:46 p.m.

An autopsy Thursday found Cerceo, who lived in Mayfair on the Northwest Side, died of multiple injuries caused by “entanglement in automatic car wash equipment,” according to the medical examiner’s office. His death was ruled an accident.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has opened an investigation into the death, according to spokesman Scott Allen.

Representatives of Express Car Wash did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
