KALASIN: A 108-year-old stupa in Kuchinarai district partially collapsed on Monday, killing a worker trapped under the debris and injuring his four colleagues.

Kuchinarai police said the stupa at Wat Pa Kud Wa tumbled down while five workers were renovating the structure.

The collapse brought down the scaffolding used by the workers and sent four of them to the ground and one under the debris, according to the police.

Rescue workers spent more than three hours locating the trapped victim who was found dead.

Pol Capt Sophon Buakhamkote, a duty officer of Kuchinarai police station, identified him as Wan Phrakhiew, 56.

The injured were three men -- Kai Chanchai, 45, Panna Mae, 39 and Tula Maotula, 23 -- and a Myanmar woman named only as Chupao, 41.

District chief Pichai Songsukertsanti said the renovation of the temple had started in 2014 and the improvement project was being implemented before the collapse.
