Man dies and another critically injured after horror multi-car crash in Carrick-On-Suir, Co Tipperary

A man in his 70s has died after a horror crash in South Tipperary this morning.

Another young man, aged in his 20s, has been critically injured after the three-car smash near South Lodge in Carrick-On-Suir at 6:50am.

The front seat passenger of one of the cars, a man in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The rear seat passenger of another car involved, a man in his 20s, was taken to St. Luke's General Hospital, Kilkenny in a critical condition.

A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently being held.

The road remains closed this afternoon with diversions in place.

A garda spokesperson said: "No other serious injuries were reported. A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene and he is currently being detained at Clonmel Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

"Forensic Collision Investigators are currently at the scene and the road is closed. Local diversions are in place.

"Gardaí at Clonmel are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Gardaí are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area at the time to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Clonmel Garda Station on 052 617 7640, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
