Man killed after tractor overturned in Glevneille, Co Cork named as Philip Lonergan

A man who died following a farm accident near Glenville, Co Cork on Wednesday night has been named locally a Philip Lonergan.

Mr Lonergan (51) from Ballyporeen, Co Tipperary, sustained fatal injuries when the tractor he was driving overturned while he was spreading slurry in a field at 5pm yesterday.

He died before he could be transferred to Cork University Hospital.

His body was subsequently removed to the hospital for a postmortem.  The incident is being treated as a "tragic accident".

The Health and Safety Authority has been notified as is standard procedure. A file will also be prepared for the Coroner's Court and an inquest will take place next year.

A total of 17 people died in farming accidents in 2018.

The overwhelming majority of those who lost their lives were over the age of 65. In 2017, 24 farmers died in work-related accidents, with 14 being aged 65 or older.

Up to 53% of fatalities last year were associated with farm vehicles and machinery, while 29% arose due to incidents with livestock.
