Man killed after shooting in Galway named locally as farmer Brendan Kilduff

The man killed after a shooting in Galway late last night has been named locally as farmer Brendan Kilduff.

Mr Kilduff is believed to have died from gunshot wounds after being mistaken for an intruder outside the home of an elderly man in Ballyhaunis.

The awful incident happened at around 11.55pm on Tuesday.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, which was then preserved for a technical examination.

A man in his 80s has been detained in relation to the incident and is being held at Castlebar Garda station.

A garda spokesman said: "An incident room has been established at Claremorris Garda Station.

"Gardai are appealing for anyone with information to contact Claremorris Garda station on 0949372080, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station."
