CHAI NAT: A surveyor of the Royal Irrigation Department was killed after ramming his pick-up truck into the rear of a lorry running in front of it in Muang district of this Central province early on Sunday.

Somkid Wongchuen, the lorry driver, told police that at about 4am while his vehicle was heading for Suphan Buri on Highway 340 at about 60 kilometres per hour he suddenly heard a loud noise from the rear end.

He stopped the lorry to take a look and found it had been hit on the rear by a pick-up truck.  He called the police.

The police found the pick-up driver had been crushed to death behind the wheel and the air bag had been activated. The pick-up was badly damaged.  From his identification documents, the man was identified as Nathapong Somjaipeng, 25, a surveyor of the Royal Irrigation Department.

The lorry driver said he had kept his vehicle running on the left lane and believed the pick-up driver might have fell asleep at the wheel.

Police were investigating.
