Man killed after being knocked down by unmarked police car near pub in Warrington

A man has died after being knocked down by an unmarked police car.

The collision, which involved the unmarked black BMW, happened outside a pub in Warrington, Cheshire, last night.

Cheshire Police has now referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Officers continue to work at the scene today and residents have spoken of their shock.

"I was meeting mum and dad in the pub when it happened outside. I had to get escorted by a policewoman because the road was closed," one horrified witness told Liverpool Echo.

Emergency services were called shortly before 7.30pm on Monday night (Liverpool Echo)

Other witnesses were also drinking at the busy Sportsmans Arms pub at the time.

The man, who was a pedestrian, died at the scene shortly after 7.30pm.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "A road in Warrington has reopened following a serious collision.

The road was closed for most of the evening (Liverpool Echo)

"The incident involving an unmarked police car and a pedestrian took place at 7.20pm on Monday 3 February on Warrington Road in Penketh.

"The pedestrian - a man - died at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing at this time."

"In line with normal procedure the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct."

No further details about the victim have yet emerged.

The investigation continues.
