Man kicked woman in the back in 'ugly' attack

A judge who jailed a man for domestic violence told him: "Commit more offences and the sentences will get longer."

Nicos Brice was serving a suspended jail term for assaulting a woman.

But Bristol Crown Court heard he then attacked another victim, in her own home, as he tried to get money off of her.

Brice, 22, of Great Clove Leaze in Stoke Gifford, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on February 3 and common assault on March 27.

Judge Martin Picton jailed him for six months and handed him a restraining order.

He told Brice: "You have a record of offending in the context of relationships.

"You offend against women and it is serious to see. Domestic violence makes it more serious.

"Commit more offences and the sentences will get longer and longer. It's your fault, not theirs."

The court heard that in February Brice kicked the woman's door open and tried to get her bank card from her.

In the process he forced her to the floor and put his knee in the small of her back.

The court heard though he tried to prise the card from her clenched fist, she managed to keep hold of it.

In an incident the next month Brice wanted the woman to go to her bank so he could withdraw cash from her account.

Once again he pushed his way into her home and, in an incident that ensued, kicked her in her back.

James McKenna, defending, conceded that what happened was "ugly".

He said his client feared losing tenancy of his home if he was sent to prison.

Mr McKenna told the court: "At the time he was suffering from substance misuse difficulties.

"He is very motivated to be abstinent and move his life forward. He is very capable but clearly lost his way on a number of occasions."

The judge said the six months jail term should enable Brice to be released early and retain his tenancy.
