A "containment" was put in place around the lake as a precaution while officers engaged with the man. He came out of the lake at around 5pm and was assessed by emergency services at the scene.

Merseyside Police have confirmed they arrested a 33-year-old man from Whiston on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. Parts of Eccleston Park were closed during the incident and have now been reopened.

Three fire engines, a search and rescue team, six police cars, and a dog unit were seen on Halsnead Avenue after police placed a cordon around the area. Within the cordon was a grey van that had crashed into a wall surrounding a house.

Search and rescue teams were seen coming back to their vehicles holding a kayak and paddles. A police helicopter was also seen circling above the Whiston and Prescot area at the time of the incident.
