Man jumps in to River Mersey to escape police after huge emergency response at docks

A man suspected to have illegally entered the Port of Liverpool early this morning jumped into the river in a desperate bid to evade capture.

Witnesses reported a large amount of police activity at the Seaforth dock and container complex following the drama, along with the presence of four ambulances and a police helicopter.

The man was eventually pulled out of the water. After being taken to hospital to be checked over, he was arrested and taken into custody.

A spokesperson for port operator Peel Ports said: "At around midnight on the 9th December, a male was discovered illegally entering the Port of Liverpool and upon being challenged by security, jumped into the river.

"Port Police were immediately made aware and emergency services were called to assist.

"The male was retrieved from the water within 20 minutes and was taken to a local hospital for assessment.

"He has subsequently been arrested and taken into custody and the incident is now a matter for local police."
