Man jailed for three and a half years after pouring petrol on bank staff following row in Bromley branch

A 51-year-old man who poured petrol over a bank and threatened to set it alight with matches has been jailed.

James Duncan-King initially entered the Metro Bank in Bromley’s High Street in October last year to dispute a payment which had been blocked from his account.

He became angry with staff and threatened to return later in the day following discussions, telling them they would not like what he was going to do next.

Around an hour later he went back into the building with a petrol can in a plastic bag.

Duncan-King told a member of staff to clear the bank then poured the fluid over, the counter and the rest of the store.

A number of staff were also doused in the liquid.

Police arrived to find Duncan-King with matches in his hand.

He was sentenced to three and a half years' imprisonment on Thursday, after previously pleading guilty to committing attempted arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered.

Detective Sergeant Danielle Power of the Met Police, who led the investigation into the incident, said: "Duncan-King had no regard for the safety of others and despite causing no serious physical injuries, his actions have had a big impact on the lives of many staff present on the day."

Duncan-King, of Sevenoaks, damaged flooring, computer equipment and furniture to the cost of more than £11,000 with his actions.

As well as this, some members of staff fell on the liquid and suffered minor injuries.
