Man jailed for THIRD time for refusing to remove caravans from his land

A North Somerset man has been sent to prison for the third time after continuing to flout court orders to move caravans from his land.

George Montgomery, of Stowey Road in Yatton, was found guilty of failing to comply with an enforcement notice ordering him to remove caravans from his land at Bristol Magistrates Court on January 6, 2020.

He was jailed for 12 months and also ordered to pay costs of £1,632.40.

The court order requires Montgomery to comply with an enforcement notice served on him by North Somerset Council.

The enforcement notice served in January 2013 requires Montgomery to remove a caravan and hardstanding from agricultural land he owns at Stowey Road. He has failed to do this.

The council applied for a court order in September 2015 to ensure Montgomery complied with the enforcement notice.

At Bristol Magistrates Court on December 8, 2016, he was found guilty of breaching the order and received a 28-day prison sentence.

Montgomery continued to ignore the order and in October 2017 brought a second static caravan onto the land.

On January 16, 2018, at Bristol Magistrates Court he was found guilty of failing to comply with the order and received a three-month prison sentence. He was also ordered to pay costs of £1,445.

Prior to this in February 2016 he was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £10,584 in costs when a jury at Bristol Crown Court found him guilty of failing to comply with the enforcement notice.

North Somerset Council executive member for planning Councillor James Tonkin said: “I am delighted the court has supported the council in this case.

“We will not tolerate flagrant breaches of the planning laws and will continue to take robust action to protect our valuable countryside from unauthorised development."
