Man jailed for sexually assaulting unconscious woman near Glasgow Central Station in broad daylight attack

A pervert who sexually assaulted a sleeping woman in broad daylight tried to avoid arrest by claiming she was his girlfriend.

Richard McDade, 45, assaulted the 31-year-old under a bridge at Glasgow Central Station in July this year.

The victim later told police that she only knew him as “John” and they weren’t in a relationship.

McDade pleaded guilty today at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the sexual assault and perverting the course of justice.

The court heard a concerned member of the public alerted the police to an “uncomfortable male” who was beside two women.

Officers arrived at the Hielanman’s Umbrella to see the victim lying “unresponsive” beside McDade.

They witnessed McDade sexually abusing the woman.

He refused to stop and continued to kiss the woman while she lay asleep beside him.

Prosecutor Amanda Gallagher said: “McDade told the police that she was his girlfriend and he could do what he wanted.

“Officers informed him that she was unconscious and unable to give consent.

“They spoke to the woman who said she knew the accused as ‘John’ and wasn’t in a relationship with him nor did she give consent in any way.”

The court heard McDade when  was arrested by police he initially gave his brother’s name instead of his own,  but later admitted what he had done.

Sentence was deferred by Sheriff Paul Crozier until next month for reports.

McDade was remanded in custody.
