Man jailed for 'severe' attack on young boy, who ended up needing brain surgery

A 29-year-old man who 'severely' attacked a young boy has been sentenced to nine years behind bars.

The boy was left with a bleed to the brain and a broken leg.

Michael Meurs, of Salmon Close in Nottingham, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court Friday, April 12, having pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent on December 5, 2018.

Officers said the young boy was rushed to the Queen's Medical Centre by an ambulance after an emergency call reporting that he had become unwell with a headache, vomiting and was unresponsive.

Staff examined him and immediately became suspicious of the injuries he had sustained which also included more than 30 bruises to the rest of his body and a bite mark.

Meurs was arrested a short time later but according to police, tried to claim he had no idea how the boy had suffered his injuries, saying that the boy had fallen over and banged his head.

However, Meurs was charged as a result of the medical evidence, witness accounts and phone work which highlighted his bad temper.

The boy needed brain surgery and has been left with scars.

Detective Sergeant Simon Harrison said: "Meurs is a dangerous individual with no limit to the violence he is capable of inflicting on others.

Driver who drank two wine bottles a day told she would have been jailed 'if you were a man'

"He attacked a vulnerable, young boy to such a severe degree, knowing full well that he wouldn't be able to defend himself.

"It is a despicable crime and we are glad that we were able to provide all the evidence needed to hold him to account for what he did.

"No child should be treated in this way and I'd like to applaud the young boy and his family for their bravery, and thank my team for their relentless approach to this difficult case."
