A man in Sweden has been jailed for 14 years for murdering an Australian in the south-west city of Gothenburg.
Kai Foley was found with stab wounds in Odinsplatsen, a public place in the middle of the city, just a few days before Christmas last year.
He was only found by chance by a police patrol investigating another matter in the early hours of the morning.
Investigators said he had left an apartment about 40 minutes before he was found and had managed to walk several hundred metres after the deadly wounds were inflicted.
The 28-year-old suffered severe spinal and abdominal injuries and later died in hospital.
Local resident Richardo Lundberg was arrested the following month. On Thursday he was jailed for murder.
Lundberg, who has a history of violence and substance abuse, admitted to being under the strong influence of drugs and claimed to have suffered from psychosis.
He also claimed not to remember the night Mr Foley died.
The 28-year-old plans to appeal the sentence.
At the time of his death, police said there was nothing to suggest why Mr Foley would be the victim of such a brutal crime.
He had recently lived in Melbourne and moved to Sweden six months earlier to live with his Swedish girlfriend.
Family and friends described him as a "gentle giant" and a "beautiful, fine young man".
Lundberg has been ordered to pay damages to Mr Foley's mother, brother and girlfriend.
