Man jailed for nine years for violent killing 'in full view of the public'

A 52-year-old man has been jailed for nine years after a man died in a street assault.

Luke Williams, 26, died in hospital three days after being attacked by Andrew Davies in Commerce Place, Aberaman, in December 16, last year.

Andrew Davies was sentenced for his manslaughter at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Friday.

Detective Inspector David Butt, of the South Wales Police major crime team, said: “Today’s sentence brings closure to what has been a complex and difficult investigation.

“It was a shocking incident which occurred in full view of the public and left local people frightened by what had happened.

“But it was information from the local community which has been critical to this prosecution and I would like to thank and give enormous credit to everybody who came forward in support of the investigation.

“Andrew Davies will now spend a considerable time behind bars for his actions that day which took a precious life away from a family.

“I hope today’s sentence brings some closure for Luke’s family who have been left devastated by this tragic incident and I hope they can now begin to rebuild their lives.”

After his death Mr Williams' family said in a statement:“We are devastated by the loss of Luke and ask for privacy at this time while we come to terms with what has happened."
