Man jailed for 30 months after brutally battering victim of attempted bag theft

A man who brutally battered the victim of an attempted bag theft was today jailed for 30 months.

David Graham, 26, pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Walter Craig to the danger of his life in the Trongate area of Glasgow in September 2017.

The court heard Graham became needlessly involved in a confrontation between Mr Craig and an unidentified woman, who was rifling through his bag after he laid it on the ground.

Mr Craig told her to stop and words were exchanged. Their row was seen by Graham who confronted Mr Craig, who hit him.

Graham then knocked Mr Craig to the ground and stamped on him causing bleeding to the brain.

Prosecutor Clara Smeaton said: “The incident with Mr Craig and the woman was watched by the accused.

“Following an interaction with Mr Graham, a fight broke out and Mr Craig hit him.

“The accused then threw Mr Craig to the ground, stomped on his head and body and he was unable to defend himself.”

Graham, a father of two, fled the scene before police arrived.

Miss Smeaton said: “Mr Craig was bleeding from his head and face.

He was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital , Glasgow and found to have a a cut to his forehead and injuries to both eyes.”

A CT scan which revealed he had bleeding to the brain.

Defence lawyer Bill McCluskey said: “Mr Craig quite rightly confronted the woman as she was going through his bag and this is met with a harsh response from her.

“This resulted in contact between them both and Mr Graham got involved, not knowing the previous history.”

Sheriff Andrew Cubie told Graham: “You became involved in an incident that had nothing to do with you. All Mr Craig was doing was protecting his property.”
