Man jailed for 18 months after being caught with a knife in public

A MAN who went out in public with a knife and then threw it away while being chased by police officers has been sentenced to 18 months in jail.

Kenneth Miller, whose address was given as a prisoner of Addiewell Prison, armed himself with a knife on October 16 in Airdrie Road, Kilsyth.

Airdrie Sheriff Court also heard last month how 29-year-old Miller was on bail at the time, an order imposed on him at the same court on September 26.

Describing events that took place on the day of the offence, prosecutor Annette Ward told the court: “At the time he was in the process of being apprehended by police.

“But he ran off from officers and threw the knife away into vegetation in an attempt to avoid detection, investigation, prosecution and arrest.”

Miller admitted attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

Defence lawyer Ceri Evans confirmed to the court that Miller was pleading guilty to both offences.

Sheriff Scott Pattison jailed Miller for 12 months for being in possession of a knife and a further six months for attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

The total sentence imposed by the sheriff was backdated to October 17, when Miller was first remanded in custody by the authorities.

Sheriff Pattison then informed Miller: “Because of your early plea, I have reduced the sentence from 27 months.”
