Man jailed after video shows him leading police on 120mph chase 15 miles down M61 and M60

A man who led police on a 120mph chase down the M61 and M60 while high on cocaine and cannabis has been jailed.

Paul Alexander was arrested in October last year following the pursuit which spanned almost 15 miles from Over Hulton to Stretford.

The 24-year-old travelled at high speeds, driving on the wrong side of the road at times, and endangering road workers.

He was first spotted by patrols in his Vauxhall Astra SRI on Manchester Road at Over Hulton, and was signalled to pull over.

But Alexander, of Ashfield Road in Rochdale, sped off towards Chequabent Roundabout in Westhoughton, and onto the M61 southbound at junction 5.

The Astra hit speeds of more than 120mph, merging onto the M60 anti-clockwise.

Alexander refused to stop - driving the wrong way down the slip road as he got off the motorway at junction 9, then the wrong way down Park Way towards Trafford Park.

The police helicopter was drafted in, and the Astra was tracked to a residential street in Stretford where Alexander was arreted.

Earlier this month, he appeared before Minshull Street Crown Court where he was convicted of dangerous driving and drug driving.

He was jailed for nine months and fined £115.

Alexander was also banned from driving for 18 months upon release and must take an extended test.

The Astra was destroyed.

Speaking on the result, PC Matt Picton of GMP's Road Policing Unit, said: "This driver failed to stop for the police due to being under the influence of drugs behind the wheel.

"Not only did he place the public in danger, but the road workers, the police and himself.

"Drug driving cannot be tolerated and we must make it socially unacceptable to do so.

"I hope this sends out a message to those who think taking drugs, driving and attempting to flee the police is acceptable.

"We will do everything we can to bring those who make our roads a dangerous place to justice."
