Man jailed after stolen car was used for coffee shop break-in

A stolen car was used in a break-in at a coffee shop a short time later.

Patrick Boyle, 31, of Main Street, Bellshill, was jailed for two years at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

He admitted that, while acting with unnamed accomplices, he stole an Audi and a Hyundai from a house in Slamannan, near Falkirk, on November 8, 2019.

Boyle further admitted driving one of the stolen vehicles while disqualified, breaking into Costa Coffee in Bell Quadrant, Carfin, with intent to steal and attempting to break into a cafe at Viewpark Parish Church.

Abby Seal, prosecuting, said the vehicle owners discovered the thefts as they prepared to go to work in the morning.

The Hyundai Coupe was found nearby with the driver’s window rolled down.

Police investigating the coffee shop break-in spotted the stolen Audi parked outside an adjacent shop when they trawled CCTV footage.

A man could then be seen breaking a window at the coffee premises.

Blood from the scene was found to be Boyle’s.

His blood was also left at the church cafe where damage was caused to a door in an unsuccessful attempt to break in.

Defence agent Paul Belardo said Boyle lives with his partner and child, and the couple are expecting another baby in May.

The solicitor stated: “He has had a persistent addiction problem for more than 10 years.

“He was given a drug treatment and testing order in another court case and he was tackling his problem.

“However, since that order ended there has been a relapse.”

The court heard that Boyle was given a five-year driving ban in 2015.

Sheriff Linda Nicolson said his record showed “persistent” offending involving road traffic matters and crimes of dishonesty.

She reduced the prison sentence from 32 months to two years because of his guilty pleas.

Boyle was banned from driving for another six years.
