A man has been jailed after crashing his car into a crowd of elderly women before fleeing the scene of the crime.
Karl Robinson left three ladies requiring surgery after he ploughed his car into the group last October.
At court this week a witness revealed how they saw Robinson accelerate so hard his wheels spun, as he exited a supermarket carpark.
The 25-year-old then mounted a pavement in a nearby street before hitting a group of ramblers, who were on their way to see the Christmas lights being switched on.
After the crash Robinson reversed away at speed where he hit a brick wall and then fled, leaving the chaos he had caused behind him.
As a result of his recklessness Robinson has been ordered to spend at least two years and nine months in prison.
On Monday, October 11, Northampton Crown Court heard how Robinson, who was driving his partner’s grandmother’s Vauxhall Corsa, dragged one of the women six feet along the pavement and left her lying on the verge.
Two of the other women were thrown 10 metres and and ended up under the front of the car. A fourth woman was astonishingly unhurt.
The group of friends were aged 68, 69, 73 and 74, according to a Northants Live report.
Witnesses heard Robinson, of Sunnyside, Woodford, rev the engine before reversing quickly back onto the road, then he mounted another pavement and hit a brick wall on Sackville Street, Thrapston.
He then got out and picked up his number plate before driving off from the scene.
It was not until the next day that Robinson handed himself in, after his partner noticed the car had been damaged.
Following the collision, the women were rushed to Kettering General Hospital, where all three received surgery for their injuries.
The first suffered two small bleeds to the brain, a broken vertebra and a “significant” injury to her arm and shoulder.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, the woman said she had suffered serious mental and physical trauma following the crash.
She had to have surgery on her shoulder, which doctors now say will only have 50 per cent function.
The woman had to stay in hospital over the Christmas period without any visits from her family and then caught Covid-19 which she fortunately recovered from.
The second seriously injured woman also stayed in hospital over Christmas and caught Covid-19 during her stay. Fortunately she also survived.
She suffered a seriously broken ankle in the crash which she required two sets of surgery to pin and the long lasting effect of the damage is still unknown.
The third woman suffered a degloved calf, which became infected and she now has significant scaring to her leg.
Sentencing, Judge David Herbert QC said that Robinson’s “aggressive driving style” lead to the collision after which he “obviously” tried to avoid detection.
Robinson was told he will have to serve at least half of his 33-months prison sentence before being released on licence.
He was also disqualified from driving for four years and four months.
