A Litherland man has been jailed after a crash that left another man in hospital for three weeks.
Garry Dowling, 29, of Ford Lane, was sentenced to 18 months in prison today, as well as being banned from driving for four years.
Emergency services were called to the junction of Marsh Lane and Irlam Road to reports of a collision between a Seat Leon and Ford Fiesta, on November 12, 2019.
The driver of the Ford Fiesta, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he remained for three weeks.
He also required months of care at home with limited mobility. Damage was also caused to a building at the site of the crash.
Following extensive enquiries including CCTV and witness appeals, Dowling, the driver of the Seat Leo, was later interviewed and charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Matrix Roads Policing Constable Jon Riley, who led the investigation, said: “This was a horrendous piece of driving which could have easily killed a young man.
"Thanks to the emergency services’ response and ongoing treatment at hospital, he is making a recovery but the psychological impact of such trauma is hard to measure. Through luck alone, nobody else nearby was caught up in this collision, which damaged a building and could easily have killed or seriously injured any pedestrians.
“It is pleasing to see Dowling facing justice following a long-running and complex investigation. He was travelling at 73 miles an hour on a residential road and I can only hope that the impact this has had on the victim, and on the life of Dowling himself, will serve as a powerful reminder to anyone who would consider driving in excess of the speed limit.
“Such laws are in place for good reason, and failure to adhere to them can lead to catastrophic, life-changing moments. Driving at excess speed or impaired in any way by drink, drugs or devices have massive effects on the reactions and ability of drivers, so don’t take any risks on the road.
“Our priority is to keep our communities safe and to prosecute any driver who puts the lives of others at risk. Every serious and fatal collision impacts upon the lives of so many people, and we’re committed to reducing such incidents and putting before the courts those who drive dangerously.”
