Man jailed after dragging woman along a road in Newcastle city centre car attack

A man has been jailed for more than two years after dragging a woman along a road with his car before knocking over her boyfriend.

Daniel Walmsley, 29, was arrested last year after viral CCTV footage in July showed him ploughing into a man in Newcastle’s Bigg Market.

The video, showed at his sentencing, showed a woman arguing with the driver of a black Ford Focus on a busy Saturday night.

The driver of the Focus then quickly reversed and tried to drive away from the area, dangerously throwing the woman to the floor.

When her boyfriend went to argue with Walmsley, he accelerated towards him, shoving him across the street and into a lamppost - before fleeing the scene.

The man and the woman both escaped without serious injury, Northumbria Police said.

Officers identified Walmsley from the footage, although the victims did not want to help with the investigation.

Walmsley pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm and dangerous driving, receiving a prison sentence of two years and one month. He was also banned from driving for four years.

He was initially charged with grievous bodily harm, a more serious offence, but prosecutors accepted a guilty plea for the lesser charge.

Detective Constable Phil Hoggins said: "Walmsley's actions were dangerous, reckless and put the lives of innocent people who were enjoying their evening at risk.

"Using your vehicle as a weapon can have serious consequences and both victims in this case were extremely lucky not to suffer any serious injuries."

DC Hoggins said that the wide CCTV coverage in the city had helped officers find Walmsley.

He added: "Now Walmsley has been sent to prison for his actions and I hope this sends a strong message to those who resort to such mindless violence."
