Man injured in horrific bottle attack in city centre while trying to call police for help

This is the moment a young man was attacked with a bottle just as he calling police for help in Manchester city centre.

The horrific incident happened near to the CIS building on Balloon Street at around 2.50am on Saturday, March 2.

Police said the victim was walking home when he got into an argument with a group of people and was assaulted.

Detectives say the man, aged in his 20s, was on the phone to police when he was attacked for a second time.

One of the group struck him to the back of the head with a bottle.

He was left with injuries to the front and back of his head and required hospital treatment.

Greater Manchester Police have now released CCTV footage that shows part of the incident.

Officers would like to speak to the individuals that are captured on camera. 

DC Kate Grundy, from GMP’s City of Manchester division, said: "The victim was assaulted as he walked home, and as he was on the phone to the police he was assaulted for a second time and struck to the back of his head with a bottle.

"Fortunately the injuries weren’t serious but it had the potential to be much worse."

"We are keen for any information on this incident, so that we can trace the people responsible."

Anyone with any information about the assault should contact police on 0161 856 4409 quoting incident number 0390 of 02/03/19.  

Information can be passed on anonymously by calling the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
