Man in very serious condition after incident in Derry

Police say a man is in a 'very serious' condition in hospital after he was 'punched in the face before falling to the ground and banging his head'.

The 24-year-old was reportedly assaulted in the Skeoge Road area of Derry last night, Sunday, July 12.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "The 24 year old was punched in the face and fell to the ground banging his head. The victim was assisted by two passers-by before being transferred to hospital by ambulance. His condition this morning is understood to be very serious.

"Anyone who was in the area or who may have captured mobile phone or dashcam footage is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 2318 12/07/20.

"A report can also be made using the online reporting form via  www.psni.police.uk/makeareport  or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at  www.crimestoppers-uk.org "

Local councillor for the area, Sandra Duffy told Belfast Live: "This was a brutal attack on a young man on his way home.

"I completely condemn it and would ask that anyone with any information bring it forward immediately, including any taxi drivers who may have been in the area at the time and have dash cam footage that may be able to identify anyone involved in this horrific attack.

"Skeoge is a relatively new community with lots of young families who deserve to feel safe in their neighbourhood not worried about violent attacks such as this on their doorstep."
