A near-naked man has been arrested after he allegedly assaulted a random passer-by on Mayfield's main street, before he allegedly tried to punch a police officer.
Emergency crews were called to Maitland Road just before 1.45pm on Tuesday where they found a man with blood on him and an injured hand.
Officers were told that the man had allegedly assaulted a stranger who walked past.
The Newcastle Herald has been told the man was wearing only underwear at the time.
The man, believed to be aged in his 30s, resisted arrest and allegedly tried to punch one of the police officers at the scene.
The man was taken to the Mater Hospital under police guard.
It is understood the passer-by was not seriously injured.
