Man in 'stolen' Mercedes who smashed into wall when cops gave chase tried to run away... it didn't end well

A man in a 'stolen' Mercedes being chased by police ploughed into a wall before trying to run away and injuring himeslf.

He ended up in hospital and was arrested.

Officers were alerted to reports of a suspected stolen Mercedes C Class in Tameside at 10.40am on Wednesday.

Cops, backed up by police chopper and sniffer dogs, tracked the vehicle down before giving chase after the driver failed to stop.

The car then smashed into a wall on St Mary's Way near Stockport town centre, towards Offerton.

The driver attempted to get away, but injured himself in the process.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary; dangerous driving; and failing to stop for police.

He was taken to hospital to be checked over.

Police are still hunting a second man who fled.

Witnesses reported seeing a large police presence at around lunchtime, with a helicopter, dog units and officers seen at the junction with Newbridge Lane.

Residents said officers were also seen searching nearby Vernon Park.
