Man in custody after stand-off with Launceston police at Prospect house

Emergency services are at a Prospect house, where a person is negotiating with police.

A man has been taken into police custody after an 11-hour standoff in the Launceston suburb of Prospect.

Tasmania Police were called to the house on Westbury Road just before 4:00am on Saturday.

Inspector Ruth Orr from Tasmania Police said officers initially received a call from the house asking for assistance, but the situation soon escalated.

"The man involved has made some threats to himself and towards police," she said.

"As a result of that we've ended up in a situation where we've contained that residence and negotiated with the male occupant."

Inspector Orr added that the man involved was known to police, and that he may have been involved in a similar situation in the past.

She also said a female occupant of the house left the premises about 5:00am.

More than 20 police officers were at the scene, including members of the Special Operations Group.

Ambulance and fire crews were also present.

Police said there was no threat to public safety, but Westbury Road was closed and people were asked to avoid the area.

Inspector Orr defended the large police operation.

"We will utilise whatever resources that we have available to us in terms of peacefully resolving the matter," she said.

"It is a drain on public and police resources, but having said that we will utilise what we have available to ensure that it is successfully and peacefully resolved."

Police released a statement just before 3:30pm saying the incident had been resolved.

A man was taken into police custody and was assisting police with their enquiries.

Police thanked nearby residents and businesses for their patience.
