Three people were rushed to hospital after a number of cars crashed with an HGV on the M62.
One injured man, in his late 50s, was taken to a major trauma centre after the crash and is reportedly in a serious condition.
Two others, a man in his 30s and a woman, are also being treated in hospital after the crash that caused major delays on the motorway .
Police, paramedics and fire crews were called to the scene on the westbound carriageway, between junction 5 and junction 4 near Huyton, shortly after 7.30am on Tuesday morning.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: "Firefighters attended a multi vehicle collision on the M62 on Tuesday 30th April.
"Crews were called to the westbound carriageway, between junction 5 and junction 4, at around 7.35am. Two fire engines and the search and rescue appliance attended.

"On arrival crews found four cars and a HGV had been involved in a collision. One of the vehicles was on its roof.
"The occupants of three of the cars and the HGV had self extricated when crews arrived."
It is believed that one person was trapped inside the fourth car and that fire crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the door and side post of the car to get the person out.
A spokesperson for North West Ambulance said: "One male patient in his late 50s was taken to a major trauma centre for treatment to serious injuries after the crash.

"Two other people were also taken to hospital, a man and a woman, for treatment to less serious injuries."
A large section of the motorway remained closed on Tuesday afternoon with police advising drivers to avoid the area.
On Twitter, the force said: "Emergency Services remain in attendance dealing with a multi vehicle RTC on the M62 WB that occurred earlier this morning.
"The motorway is currently closed between J5-7 WB. Updates will follow but please avoid the area at this time & consider alternative routes."
