Man in serious condition after dive on Cork coast goes wrong

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after a horror dive went wrong in Cork yesterday [Monday].
Emergency services rushed to the scene after a man hit some rocks after diving from a rising in Nohoval Cove just before 2.45pm.

The man's friends managed to get him out of the water and onto some rocks before raising the alarm.
Lifeboat crews from Kinsale and Oysterhaven rushed to the scene and the man was put on a stretcher before being met by an ambulance waiting at the shore.

He was then transferred to the Coast Guard's Rescue 115 helicopter and airlifted to Cork Airport and on to the nearby University Hospital.

The man's condition is now understood to be serious.
The incident happened in the popular sunny spot as locals flocked to the beaches to enjoy the hottest day of the year so far.

The area the man dived has a number of rocks that rise out of the sea which are popular with swimmers.
The rock he jumped from is around 50ft high, however it's not believed he jumped from the top of it.

The incident was the second water rescue in Cork over the weekend after two people were saved after getting into difficulty in a park near the city.

Two teenage girls were rescued from a river in Ballincollig Regional Park on Saturday after being caught out by the currents and quick rising water level.

Thankfully a bystander jumped in and managed to get them safely to land.

Stephen Scullly, the Water safety officer for the City Council said it could have been a lot worse had there not been people there to help the girls.

"They got an awful fright but people should not be swimming there, there are big signs saying 'No Swimming' in the area.
"It looks very inviting but it is extremely dangerous with the rapid currents there and whirlpools.

"Within five minutes water levels can increase rapidly if there is a release from the dam.
"We would appeal to people that they can enjoy the park and the amenities but not to swim there.
"Hopefully people might listen to the message now and take heed of it".
